In this lesson, you get to learn what is a dangling modifier and how to correct it.
A modifier is called dangling when a sentence doesn't have the word or words a modifier intends to modify.
Examples of dangling modifiers:-
1. Seeking an apology for my bad behavior, a letter was written to my teacher.
Dangling modifier - seeking an apology for my bad behavior
This phrase has nothing to modify in this sentence. The word or words that can be modified logically is/are not there. Next to this modifying phrase comes the word LETTER. Can a letter seek an apology? No, right?
2. While talking over the phone, the train left.
Dangling modifier - while talking over the phone
Who's talking over the phone? The train? The sentence doesn't have the word that can be modified by the modifier. Hence, the modifier dangles.
3. After writing the book, a movie is going to be made.
Dangling modifier - after writing the book
What is it modifying? A movie? Can a movie write a book? No. So, this modifies nothing.
How to correct a dangling modifier?
1. Infuse a word or words close to the dangling modifier. The word or words you put should be able to modified logically.
2. Change the participle phrase or modifier into a dependent clause using a subordinating conjunction in the beginning.
Correction:-
1. Seeking an apology for my bad behavior, a letter was written to my teacher.
• Seeking an apology for my bad behavior, I wrote a letter to my teacher.
• Because I was seeking an apology for my bad behavior, a letter was written to my teacher.
2. While talking over the phone, the train left.
• While talking over the phone, I missed the train.
• While I was talking over the phone, the train left.
3. After writing the book, a movie is going to be made.
• After writing the book, I'm going to make a movie.
• After I'm done writing the book, a movie is going to be made.
