Transcript:-GRE or GMAT? Are you confused about which one to take? Now that you have decided you want to pursue your postgraduate studies, the first step is obviously to tackle the GMAT or GRE. And we know choosing between these two can be a tad bit confusing. But don’t worry! We have got you covered. Here is our comparative analysis of both to help you decide which test is easier to take and the best for your application.
The primary difference between GRE and GMAT is that the GRE is used to get admissions for a wide variety of graduate programs, while the GMAT is only used to apply to business schools.
US business school such as Yale SOM, Ross School of Business, University of Michigan are some of the prominent business schools that accepts GRE score for MBA programs.
The GRE consists of 3 main sections,
a 60-minute Analytical section with two essays: the Issue and the Argument each for 30-minute. The Issue task presents two topics of which you must select one on which to write an essay presenting the writers position on the topic. The Argument task presents a situation. You are required to analyze the logic of the given situation and suggest how and where the reasoning may be faulty or require improvement.
Two 35-minute quantitative sections in which you have to answer 20-question that has Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer, Quantitative Comparison, and Numeric Entry questions. The required level of math knowledge should be that of a 10th Grade student. Some of the questions involve data interpretation. An calculator is provided to students by the test center.
Verbal sections and two 35-minute Quantitative sections consisting of sentence equivalence, Text Completion and reading comprehension
The GMAT consists of a 30-minute Analytical section with one writing essay, a 30-minute Integrated Reasoning section, a 62-minute Quantitative section and a 65- minute Verbal section.
The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) measures your ability to think critically. The task presents a statement of a situation. You are required to analyze the logic of the given situation and suggest how and where the reasoning may be faulty or require improvement.
The Integrated Reasoning section that measures your ability to evaluate information and skills you need to succeed in technologically advanced, data-driven world. The questions involve interpretation of tabular, graphical and written information from variety of sources.
The Quantitative section measures your ability to analyze data and draw conclusions using reasoning skills. It has two types of multiple choice questions: data sufficiency and problem solving.
The Verbal section measures your ability to read and understand written material, to evaluate arguments, and to correct written material to confirm to standard written English. All questions are multiple-choice.
When it comes to difficulty level, GRE has harder verbal and vocabulary test and more emphasis is given on writing. Whereas, GMAT has difficult math test and emphasis is given on grammar.
Both the tests, GRE as well as GMAT are conducted on computer systems.
The duration of the exam for GRE is roughly 3:10 hours to 3:45 hours. With 1 hour for analytical writing, 1 hour for verbal reasoning, 1 hour 10 minutes for quantitative reasoning and a variable time for experimental or research.
The total time duration for the GMAT test, including the breaks and test instructions, is of 3.5 hours.
Test score is valid for 5 years for GRE as well as GMAT test.

Quantitative ability consists of 130 to170 points
Verbal ability consists of 130 to 170 points
and analytical writing consists of 0 to 6 points with 0.5 as increment point.

Integrated reasoning consists of 1-8 points and has 12 questions
Quantitative reasoning consists of 6-51 points and has 37 questions to be solved in 75 minutes

Analytical writing assessment consists of 0-6 points with 0.5 as increment point.
GRE has no negative marking systems.GMAT too doesn’t have negative marking. It is a Computer Adaptive Test means that the questions you are given are based on your ability to solve the preceding ones. Thus, if you answer a question wrong, the next one would be easier with low score.
