WATCH: Sen. Murphy says it’ll be a 'real tragedy' if GOP blocks witnesses | Trump impeachment trial

Some Republicans have said they are confident they have enough votes to block witnesses in the impeachment trial against President Donald Trump. Speaking with the PBS NewsHour, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said, if true, it would be a "real tragedy for the republic." Murphy said there's at least one witness -- former national security adviser John Bolton -- who could provide the "most direct testimony yet" of the president's corruption. Murphy spoke to the PBS NewsHour’s Lisa Desjardins on the second day of questioning from senators on Thursday, Jan. 30. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December on two articles -- abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The questions come ahead of a vote on whether to bring forward witnesses and documents as part of the Senate trial. The Senate must now decide whether to acquit the president or convict him of the charges and remove him from office.
