In this video, I take you through the process of rough turning some gigantic cherry logs. A significant amount of preparation goes into creating a hand turned wooden bowl. For starters, you have to find the log... and then there's the chainsawing process, the rough turning process, and the drying process - all of these happen before the bowl is ready for it's final turning. Here, I show how I go about cutting up the log into slabs with the chainsaw, mount it on the lathe and get it into a rough bowl shape, and core the inside of the bowl to maximize what I can create from a giant piece of wood like this. All of this is just to get it ready for the drying process which will take several months to a year before this piece is ready to go on the lathe again. I show how quick and easy it is to use Amy Grigg's spike plate too - a huge time saver for production work!
