QUIT YOUR JOB TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS (THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW THIS) * Don’t quit working. It is exciting when you find out what your true calling is in life, so it is understandable to immediately want to jump in with both feet. However there are usually many steps needed before you are able to really pursue your dream: Most can be pursued while still working a “day” job. Brainstorm and make sure you plan out each step needed to get from where you are today to be where you want to be. Make a note of which ones you can do while still working, and when you absolutely have to quit. Keeping your job while preparing for your end goal will take pressure off you to immediately succeed, provide income and insurance during the many months( or years) before your dream job can support you, plus allows you to save money to fund your dream.
* Develop your business plan. This does not have to detailed to the teeth but if you are starting your own business you must have the basics: Description, target market, market analysis, organisation, funding, revenue and expense projections. Remember that starting your own business is not the only way to follow your dream or to be able to retire early. You can also pursue a better degree to get a better paying job and then create additional streams of income or just being really good at investing. The more money you save and invest, the faster you will be able to live of your investments do be able to do whatever. Don’t start a business just to start a business. Many entrepreneurs become depressed because it is not the life that people are honest about. You usually have to work many more hours without ever being sure it will pay off in the end. But having a stable job it is easy to create a budget because you know your monthly income and your expenses. Then you will be able to easier have an investment plan that you can pursue. So both ways work. Either starting your business or getting a high paying jobs. You don’t even need to have a high paying job, just do something you enjoy and you will find yourself spending less money because you eliminate the negativity in your life. And when you do that it is easier to stop with unnecessary spendings for temporary positive feedback.
* Gain experience. If your current job is not related to the field you want to pursue, consider switching jobs to something that will give you needed experience while still getting a regular pay check. Or find some related work on the weekend. If your dream is to open a restaurant, see if there are open shift at your local restaurant. Also consider volunteering or freelance work in your free time. Experience not only will help you get a foot in the door, but it will also give you a better understanding of what a day in the life of your dream job really looks like. We tend to romanticise the greener grass on the other side, your dream job may end up looking better on paper than in real life.
* Became an expert in your craft. It is so so so important that you become an expert in every part of your dream job. If you want to become a fashion designer, learn every tool of the trade. Work with multiple fabrics. Play with computer programs. Experiment with different types of clothing. By the time you start your dream job you will already be an expert and won’t have to waste time and money actually learning it
* Put yourself out there and get to know people. Networking is key here. Make sure you are always in the right place at the right time. You never know when you will get a big breakthrough, make the right connection or get valuable advice from people who can help you achieve your goals. And when it comes to anything remotely related to your passion say yes to everything. As Richard Branson’s says, if someone offers you are opportunity and your not sure you can do it, just say yes and then learn how to do it as fast as possible.
* Learn to esteem all your expenses. Determine how much money you will need to get started with your new endeavour, and where it will come from, assume that once you start your new path you will have no income for one year, it could be less or longer depending on the complexity of your plan. Create a spreadsheet with the following:
* Explore all revenue sources: Your dream job probably has an obvious path to making money, but think outside the box for additional revenue streams. Let’s say you open a store selling coffee, don’t just sell coffee, but look at creative sources of revenue. Maybe you could find corporate advertisers or selling cute t-shirts and mugs at your store. Look into hosting parties or partnering with local artists to showcase their art on your walls. Be creative and find ways to increase your source of revenue.
Be realistic. When I was younger I wanted to own multiple businesses. I thought that everything was possible, I was good at so many things and I thought that it would be a piece of cake to start them. But little did I know that I could not find time to manage it
