Feb 4, 2020 (the lead-in pics shows Jan 4, it was Feb 4) - We launched our boat at the Coquina Beach boat ramp, between Anna Maria Island and long Boat Key, at 7:00AM. The air temperature was a brisk 56-degrees, brisk for Florida, and the near-shore water temperature registered at 62.5 degrees on our sonar. Our heading was S/W about 40 miles or till we reached water depths of 120+ feet. We were looking for hard bottom, structure, and hopefully mark some fish. Just a short time in to our trip, about 7-miles out, Capt. Tony noticed what appeared to be a reef on our sounder. He immediately turned to investigate and I wasted no time in casting a shiny jig. The flashing lure barely made a surface splash, when I hooked in to a Spanish, a surprise in these kind of water temps. My second cast hooked in to a small King Mackerel, also surprising. I obviously interrupted their breakfast, munching on the giant bait ball bellow. We wasted no time here, for we had bigger fish to fry (pun intended) a good distance off-shore.
We reached our targeted area, deployed our GPS trolling motor in “anchor” mode, and noticed the water temperature had risen to 65.5 degrees. In no time we each made our first drop, and Fish-On, under a minute. The action was non-stop all day. We were catching huge Red Grouper, small Amber Jack, and good size Banded Rudder fish. We (I) wasted about an hour, on what we thought was a Giant Goliath Grouper, that inhaled one of the Amber Jack we initial hooked on to. … had an awesome day on the water - thanks for watching!
